Yes, I know the Rock Gods of Romance is an e-book set of 6 Novellas. However, since Mina is one of my favorite Filipino Authors, of course I started reading her story first! One of the things that got my attention is the fact that the main character, Haley Reese plays the piano. One of my regrets in life is not finishing my piano lessons when I was a kid (I was anime-crazed during that time!). And to add to that, the main character's love interest is a hot rock-star whom Haley was smitten to since she was a kid, which reminded me of the 90's, when boy bands were still "in". I remembered buying every casette tapes, posters, magazines and even song books (songhits) that got The Moffats on the cover.
The story started with Haley bumping into his long-time crush, rockstar Oliver at the airport. I liked that Haley was all modest and didn't a.) Giggle b.) Shriek c.) Fainted when she saw him. Well maybe because she outgrew that crush already. So, they became acquaintances and found out they are going to the same place, sort of a music "camp", where they are both mentors. This is actually the scene I love the most, the bumping-into-someone-who-would-later-on-become-your-love-interest part. I always find it "serendipity-ish".
The story continued with a bump on the road, as Hayley's ex came into the scene, but for me, made her and Oliver closer. With the short scenes that he was into, and how Hayley described him, obviously he's the type of guy who wants a girlfriend who would just sit tight whatever may be going on with their life. I gave him the benefit of the doubt though, that this time he really wanted to change for Hayley, and I was kind of sad that he didn't get the chance. The place he chose for his proposal was so romantic, a couple who's inlove could have enjoyed it. But as we all say, why get married if you are not with the right person, right?
When truthfully, Hayley did not communicate with Oliver after Breathe Music, I gave her a thumbs-up. What I waited for was for Oliver to prove that their's was not a "for the weekend only" kind of relationship, which Mina didn't disappoint. Aside from the airport scene, my 2nd favorite would be the last part. I've read novels that ended the girl rushing to the guy's concert then the guy would confess his love, but Mina was able to give us something fresh (I won't tell so you have to read it for you to find out *wink*).
This may be a novella, but Mina was able to squish in that right amount of completeness, that wouldn't make you say, the story was stretched just so it could have more than five chapters, or say "it's the end already?"
Hot Piano Girl. With her character, the way Oliver describes her, I think she'd do good as a kindergarten teacher. I can see a part of my self in her, that part sometimes that do not believe in what I am capable of, but I'm glad she was able to face those with dignity, after all, if she herself wouldn't, no one could make her do it.
Just because of the surname, all the time I was reading, I was thinking of Ryan Cabrera! Rockstar. Music nerd. One thing about this guy is his humility. I think that's why he was still able to get back up.
Hayley's bestfriend. She is one helluva friend, setting up Hayley like that. Responsible and caring, I liked that she looks out for Hayley and only wants what's good for her.
The ex-boyfriend, nuff said.
All in all, I liked the novella. That feeling when you are reading a Sweet Dreams novel, just a little less giggly since this was actually intended for a more mature audience. I would recommend it if you want an easy read.
