DON’T MESS WITH HEXES
Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there. Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie is afraid she’s a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn’t help.
Then, seemingly out of the blue, Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company that tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie’s ordinariness is an asset. Lacking any bit of magic, she can easily spot a fake spell, catch hidden clauses in competitor’s contracts, and detect magically disguised intruders. Suddenly, average Katie is very special indeed.
She quickly learns that office politics are even more complicated when your new boss is a real ogre, and you have a crush on the sexy, shy, ultra powerful head of the R&D department, who is so busy fighting an evil competitor threatening to sell black magic on the street that he seems barely to notice Katie. Now it’s up to Katie to pull off the impossible: save the world and–hopefully–live happily ever after.
After reading two consecutive YA Novels, I decided to take a break and read chick-lit. This series has been on my TBR pile for a couple of weeks now. And since the summary is interesting, I decided to pick it up.
This book is about magic, or involves magic rather, except for the Main Character. Katie, is your typical normal/boring office girl, who has issues with her boss. She lives in New York, and is 'Immuned', meaning she can see through illusions and enchantemnts. She was offered a job at MSI aka Magic, Spells and Illusions Inc., and since the benefits were good, and her colleagues were much nicer compared to her boss, she finally decided to quit her job and join MSI. Guess who the CEO of the company is? None other than..*drum roll* Merlin himself! Yes, Merlin of Camelot, the Wizard who helped King Arthur succeed. The story progressed as Katie being very lucky which resulted to her being promoted to the Executive Assistant post (She accidentally saw someone stealing files inside their office, even if te mugger is supposed to be invisible, since she's immuned and all). Another time is when the crisis became very big, and again luckily, she knew an attorney who would be able to help the company's crisis of a competitor, who was an employee of rhe company before, selling spells that would cause harm to both magical and non-magical people.
I expected a "Shopaholic" type of novel since it was set in the Big Apple and all, however it wasn't. I can say it was a good start for a first novel (there are currently 7 books in the series). Katie, for me, has just been very lucky, since it seems that the stars were in her favor everytime she needs it. The novel was not action-packed, but it did not bore me to death too, because it involved magic, wizards, fairies and a main character that is non-magical that I haven't encountered in a chick-lit novel before. I am expecting and hoping that the next novels would be better than this one.
The 26 year old main character who is very non-magical, grew up on Texas, worked at her parents' business but decided to try her luck in New York. She can see what a normal person can't.
The always shy and awkard but cute wizard. One of the reasons why I kept reading the book (tee-hee!). Humble eventhough he is powerful. I am curious to know more about his life, how his parents got killed and who raised him.
Another one of Katie's colleagues at MSI. Slick-rick. Uses the illusion of him looking very much alike Johnny Depp.
aka Merlin. He was brought back from retirement due to the crisis that MSI is facing.
Rating: 3 of 5 Stars.
